Why You Should Take a Rigger and Signalman Course

A rigger and signalman acts as the eyes and hands of the crane operator. It is his job to prepare and tie the load so that it can be lifted safely and also to give the crane operator the correct signals. Without him, the crane operator cannot perform his job competently. If you want to become a rigger and signalman, then you should start by taking the rigger and signalman course.

What does the course cover?
The signalman course covers the following:

•    Government legislations and regulations

•    Roles and responsibility of a rigger

•    Pre-lift inspection of the lifting gear and accessories

•    Safe lifting operation

•    Slinging methods

•    3-steps lifting and lowering method

•    Hand and verbal signals for hoisting, lowering, slewing, jibbing, travelling and jibbing

•    Responding to an emergency situation

•    Reinstating the work area after a lifting operation

The rigger course covers the following:

•    Government legislations and regulations

•    Roles and responsibility of a signalman

•    Proper handling and maintenance of wire rope sling

•    Rigging methods and techniques

•    Estimating the load and its centre of gravity

•    Lifting procedures

•    Rigging methods and techniques

•    Responding to an emergency situation

•    Pipes, valve, skip Motor and propeller lifting techniques

•    Bowline and clove hitch knot tying techniques

The rigger and signalman course prepares you to perform the duties of a rigger and signalman safely and correctly so that the crane operator can perform his job expertly. The course is available in English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.

Is the course mandatory?
This course is mandatory for anyone who wants to work as a rigger and signalman. Sometimes, a company may appoint one of its employees to perform the tasks of a rigger and signalman even if he hasn’t completed the course. But before beginning to perform the duties assigned to him, he must take the course and get certification.

Where can you take the course?
There are several training providers in Singapore that offer this course. You can easily find them on the internet. Before choosing one, make sure that the training provider is accredited by the Ministry of Manpower, Government of Singapore. Also, make sure that they provide on-site training and that their course covers all the topics listed above.

What is the duration of the course?
The duration of the course is typically two days. If you have been working in the freight handling industry, this is enough time to learn the tricks of the trade. But it may last longer. In any case, by the end of the course, you will know the relevant government regulations and legislations, be able to tie the load safely and correctly and give the correct signals and possess all the relevant knowledge and skills.

What certification will you receive?
After successfully passing the course examination, you will be issued with a Rigger and Signalman certificate. This certificate allows you to apply for registration with the Ministry of Manpower, Government of Singapore. But you must apply for registration within 6 months of the completion of the course. You must also be at least 21 years old at the time of application. If you are a foreigner, you must also possess a work pass.

Once you receive your rigger and signalman registration card, you will be able to carry out the duties of the rigger and signalman. If you are looking for a job, you should consider obtaining a BizSAFE Level 2 certification to increase your chances.
